Daauw home; project Kajsiab in Huai Xai
Albert and O |
Anna, Albert and O on the road |

In Huay Xai we find Erika in a homestay called Daauw Home.
Daauw Home is a restaurant, bar and homestay, runned by a Dutch woman and her Lao husband, Lara and Nzoua.
We feel at home immediately! Such friendly people and a very relaxed atmosphere.
Lara and Nzoua have 3 small kids and run a project called Kajsiab. Daauw Home is a part of the Kajsiab project.
With the projects they run here they support the people in mountain villages, who are living in much poorer and tougher conditions than the city people here in Laos.
They focus mainly on Health care and women emancipation.
The Kajsiab project contains many long and short term goals. Some examples are; starting a health clinic for women, provide clean drinking water, put up a school, a herb garden and a organic farm. And this they want to accomplish in 7 different mountain villages in the region.
Short term goals are about providing information, teaching English, providing a learning environment for women and creating places where women can work and sell their handicrafts. Daauw Home provides room for these goals.
In Daauw Home cultures can meet and learn from each other in a very friendly environment
We did not expect that the conditions concerning healthcare and education would be so poor in Laos. But especially in the villages many people still die of illnesses that are easy to cure. There is no education about health and hygiene and knowledge about traditional healthcare also gets forgotten.
The touristic places in Laos are developing and getting more rich and expensive, but kids in the rural areas only get 4 years of education. Meanwhile prices are rising, partly because of the growing tourism industry but the salary of people in less touristic areas does not rise.
It can be dangerous in Houay Xai though...! ;-) |

Daauw home; project Kajsiab in Huai Xai
When we are not cycling, but relaxing, we have contact with fellow cyclists that we have met on the road. In Luang Namtha we are emailing with Albert and Erika. Erika is Japanese and had some visa trouble in China, so she is already in Laos for 2 weeks. Albert is still in China, cycling the same route as we have cycled, but 1 week later.
We talk to Albert and decide to wait a bit, so we can cycle together. Somewhere on the road, 60 km from Luang Namtha we meet again.
We also meet O, a cyclist from Thailand, who we will definitely meet again in the future!
We cycle together to Huay Xai, a small town on the border with Thailand. There is not much to do there, but the route is beautifull and Erika is staying with some really nice people see said. So enough reasons to cycle west.
The scenery is magnificent and it is nice cycling with our friends. We re enjoying Laos a lot, the roads are so quiet and the people so friendly. After China, this is a big change.
At the end of day 2 we meet another cyclist, coming from the opposite direction. "dangerous road ey!, with all the trucks" he says to us. We advice him not to go cycling in China and continue our journey a bit perplex.

What Lara and Nzoua are doing here is truly amazing! Raising 3 small kids and running a big project. Every penny they have and all their energy and will-power goes into this project. This gave us a lot of inspiration. Not many people could live a self-forgetful live like this. It is good to see that this is possible.
They have a website in English, on the website you can read a lot more about the project. If you go to Laos we advice you to visit this place! Even if its only for the fishBBQ and rooftop campfire!
You can also support the project financially through the website, every form of support is needed.
